Title: What’s Your Story? Building Cultural Capacity in Genetic Counseling
Duration: Available as 5 hour workshop, or longer (multiple days)
Potential Audiences: Clinical supervisors in health care training programs, practicing health care professionals, or instructional faculty
Objectives for 5 hour Workshop:
After this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify resources for enhancing cultural knowledge.
- Apply cultural and spiritual assessment tools to genetic counseling cases.
- Demonstrate cultural self-awareness, resulting in increased recognition of personal biases, limitations, and strengths when working with culturally diverse clients.
- Discuss ways to respond to racist or discriminatory remarks.
- Define ways to overcome barriers to effective student-supervisor communications.
- Brainstorm methods to resolve conflict in the workplace.
- List organizational changes that can help improve cross cultural communications.
Teaching Methods: Cases, small and large group discussions, PowerPoint slides, YouTube videos, vignettes from DVDs, internet sites, handouts, self-reflection questions, role-playing, goal setting
Lecture Topics and Discussion Questions:
- What is your family’s immigration story?
- Characterize your favorite client. What can we learn from reflecting on our preferences?
- Which cultural groups are prevalent where you live and work? If you aren’t sure, how can you find out?
- Discuss the culture of no culture in health care.
- List health beliefs and your feelings about them.
- List 5 or more dimensions of culture.
- Compare and contrast diversity and cultural competence.
- Discuss actions of health care providers that may cause cultural offense.
- Discuss client actions that may offend health care providers.
- What are health disparities? Give examples of health disparities in genetics.

- Give examples of cultural humility in clinical practice.
