EDUCATION: Sample Workshop Agenda and Content

Title: What’s the Recipe? Building Cultural Capacity in Genetic Counseling

Duration: Available as 5 hour workshop, or longer (multiple days)

Potential Audiences: Students, faculty, and/or clinical supervisors in health care training programs, practicing health care professionals

Objectives for 5 hour Workshop:
After this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Identify strategies for enhancing cultural encounters, cultural knowledge, cultural awareness and cultural skills

2. Discuss how cultural biases can influence clinical interactions

3. Use cultural and spiritual assessment tools

4. List strategies for working more effectively with non-English speaking clients and medical interpreters

5. Develop personal goals for communicating more effectively with all clients

Teaching Methods: Cases, small and large group discussions, PowerPoint slides, YouTube videos, vignettes from DVDs, internet sites, handouts, self-reflection questions, role-playing, goal setting

Workshop Discussion Topics and Discussion Questions:

  • Which cultural groups are prevalent where you live and work? How is this information accessed?

  • Tell a story of a border crossing.

  • Discuss the culture of no culture in health care.

  • List health beliefs and your feelings about them.

  • List 5 or more dimensions of culture.

  • Discuss actions of health care providers that may cause cultural offense.

  • Discuss client actions that may offend health care providers.

  • Give examples of stereotypes and discuss both their potentially helpful and problematic applications in health care.

  •  Discuss the concept of unearned privileges in modern culture.

  • Discuss how your work environment feels from the perspective of cultural diversity.

  • How do I address stereotyping or discriminatory remarks in the workplace?

  • Discuss racism and cite examples in society and in health care practice.

  • Identify one’s current personal standing in the cultural competence continuum and set future goals.

  • Discuss the applications of cultural humility in your practice.

  • Use cultural and spiritual assessment tools and counseling techniques to enhance provider-client communications and understanding in your practice.

  • Have I asked myself the right questions?
