EDUCATION: Sample Lecture

Title: Cultural Humility in Genetic Counseling and Nurse-Midwifery
(based on a talk for the American College of Nurse Midwives Ohio Affiliate)

Duration: One hour

Potential Audiences: Modifications can be made for any health care professional group

Objectives for 1 hour Lecture:
After this workshop, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the genetic counseling process

  • Distinguish between diversity, cultural humility and cultural competence

  • Give an example of culturally competent genetic counseling

  • Identify ways to apply cultural humility to genetic counseling and nurse-midwifery practice

Teaching Methods: Risk perception group activity, large group discussion, PowerPoint Slides, YouTube video, case vignette from DVD, internet sites, handouts, sharing of examples from personal practice, self reflection questions.

Lecture Topics and Discussion Questions:

    • Who has worked with a genetic counselor or made a referral? Tell us about the circumstances.

    • List sensitive or difficult topics that may arise or that may be pertinent in genetic counseling and in nurse-midwifery.

    • Participate in an activity to explore the factors individuals use to determine their “risk.”

    • Define and describe cultural humility. Discuss how the concept of cultural humility overlaps, but is preferable to the concepts of diversity and the concept of cultural competence.

    • Share resources for helping patients know what questions to ask a health care provider.

    • Share resources and methods for modifying words used in health care settings to facilitate health literacy.

    • Demonstrate teach back and discuss applications to nurse-midwifery practice.

    • Discuss video on lesbian couple seeking pregnancy care and how to improve communications. Discuss applications to other cross cultural scenarios. Provide examples of how to “recover” from communication gaffs.

    • Review resources for organizational cultural competence, especially with respect to lesbians who will see health care for pregnancy and birth.

    • Identify ways to apply cultural humility to genetic counseling and nurse midwifery practice.
